A Festival Built Around Community, Creativity & Representation

Throughout the day, attendees experienced 17 back-to-back performances and activations ranging from spoken word, live singing, breakdancing, youth speeches, historical reenactments and live DJ sets — including performances from youth DJs who brought energy and representation to the stage throughout the entire event.

The festival also featured a live painting installation generously donated by Elevated Thought, which unfolded in real time as the event progressed, visually capturing the emotion and spirit of the day.

Beyond the entertainment, the festival intentionally created opportunities for connection and economic empowerment within the community.

Over 40 vendors participated throughout the event, representing everything from youth clothing brands and pressed juice businesses to mental health nonprofits, youth-serving organizations, artists and local entrepreneurs. Several vendors completely sold out of their products throughout the day, demonstrating the real support and visibility community-centered events can generate for small businesses.

In total, the festival contributed over $15,000 back into the community while directly supporting more than 15 creatives and performers financially. Every performer and act received a minimum payment of $150 because we believe artists, speakers and creatives deserve to be compensated for the value they bring into community spaces.

Creating Space for Healing Conversations

While the festival was rooted in celebration, it also created intentional space for deeper conversations surrounding healing and emotional well-being.

Throughout the event, both a male and female speaker took the stage to speak openly about the mental health challenges men face, the importance of vulnerability and the need for safe spaces where honest healing conversations can happen within our communities.

These moments reflected the deeper mission behind Brothers In Arms — creating environments where conversations around mental health are normalized, accessible and community-driven.

Honoring History Through a Historic Flag Raising

Just days prior to the festival, Brothers In Arms hosted a historic Juneteenth flag-raising ceremony in the city of Lawrence.

For the first time in the city’s history, the Juneteenth flag was officially raised as community members gathered together to sing the Black National Anthem and honor the significance of Juneteenth and Black liberation.

During the ceremony, Brothers In Arms also received an official citation recognizing the importance of preserving and uplifting Juneteenth within the community.

The moment served as both a celebration of progress and a reminder of the importance of continuing to preserve culture, history and collective memory for future generations.

The Digital & Community Impact

The impact of the festival extended far beyond the physical event itself.

Across all social media platforms, Juneteenth Festival content generated over 100,000 views, helping amplify the stories, performances and experiences shared throughout the day to audiences far beyond Lawrence.

More importantly, the event created something difficult to measure with numbers alone: connection.

Families gathered together. Young people saw themselves represented on stage. Local businesses were supported. Healing conversations were normalized. Artists were celebrated. Community members felt joy together.

That is the true impact of this work.

Looking Ahead to the Future of the Festival

As Brothers In Arms continues to grow the vision for the Juneteenth Arts & Awareness Festival, the goal moving forward is to deepen the experience even further.

Future festivals will place a stronger emphasis on healing-centered programming through wellness activations, yoga, somatic embodiment practices, movement experiences and fitness competitions that allow attendees to engage with the festival in more intentional and interactive ways.

The vision is to create an environment where individuals can choose what resonates with them throughout the day — whether that’s art, music, healing, wellness, entrepreneurship, movement or community dialogue.

We also look forward to continuing to honor underrepresented businesses, creatives and leaders whose work continues to strengthen and transform our communities every day.

What started as a festival is continuing to evolve into something much greater.

A space for culture.
A space for healing.
A space for opportunity, connection and collective liberation.
